When I make a character rig certain parts get distorted when I rotate them. For instance, the upper and lower arm will rotate fine, but the hand will get destorted when I rotate it. All I did was make the arms and hands child objects and move the pivot points to the joints.

Also, is there anything like the skeleton set up Maya has for character rigging, or does swift mostly do that with child objects pivot points and mesh morphing?

Typically that happens when you scale your object on individual axis's. When you do that and then apply a object to it as a child it inhierits the scale properties as well (hence the distortion). You can fix this by converting your obeject to a mesh object (take it into the Advanced Modeler and hit edit mesh) and then bring it back to Scene Editor then apply your object to it as a child object.
